It’s A Mystery!

Our hosts, Rich and Gwen, booked a 3 night getaway for the four of us but they kept the destination a secret from Dave and I. The only clue we were given was “It’s a hotel, but it’s not a hotel”. A very cryptic clue!

Day 10: We left Chudleigh at 10am for the start of our mystery tour

The kids, Grundle & Grimple, came too.

Our first waypoint on Google Maps was a coffee stop at Winkleigh. Unfortunately it was a bit early in the day for a drink of the hard stuff at Sam’s Cider so coffee and cake was the order of the day.

Old cider bottles.

2nd stop: As we couldn’t check in to our accommodation until 4pm (wherever it might be, as we still don’t know!), it was a perfect opportunity to play the tourist so our next stop was a lookout at Torrington.

See the narrow lanes of farm? There was once a leper colony here and all that land down there was divided like this so people didn’t come into contact with each other as they farmed their lot.

Stop 3 was not much further on and we pulled into the car park at Dartington Crystal.

Dave’s finger is about where we left from at Chudleigh
There were crystal displays for each decade

It was interesting to see how glassware has changed over time, becoming simpler in shape with smoother, more elegant lines

Crystal objects specially made to celebrate King Charles’ Coronation

We resisted going to the shop, where our holiday money could have rapidly disappeared in a blaze of crystal glory.

I wasn’t so frugal at our next stop, Morrison’s supermarket, where a t-shirt caught my eye and made it into the shopping basket with some delicious strawberries 🍓

Grundle and Grimple found some playmates … and we discovered they are not gnomes but Gronks! Two kids are enough so these new ones didn’t join our family 🙂

We had lunch at the supermarket cafeteria and, with still more time to kill headed to Hartland Quay where we viewed the sea through a rain spattered windscreen. ☔️

Hartland
It’s a grey day today!

Now we find out that Hartland is our destination so we follow Rich and Gwen into Fosfelle Glamping and there ahead of us is our ‘hotel that is not a hotel’!

We’ve arrived at our mystery destination, Bertram’s Hotel

I’ll show you around tomorrow!
