Stratford-upon-Avon – A Shakespearean Experience

To be, or not to be … well , today there was no doubt we were in Shakespeare territory.

Day 39: Stratford-Upon-Avon is a photographer’s dream! It is one photo opportunity after another, one picturesque property after another, so here goes!

We started a little way out of town –

Ann Hathaway’s Cottage

We then moved on to a Park & Ride and hopped on a free bus to take us into Stratford itself. It dropped us off at the market square that featured an old fountain.

Old fountain – no water now, though

Of course, the fountain was inscribed with Shakespeareanisms.

Honest water…?

At last, we found Shakespeare!

And his birthplace

More buildings … they really display the character of the era.

The River Avon has a beautiful park along its banks with shady trees, river boats, buskers and … people! It is school holidays here so that, combined with glorious warm sunny days, brings out the crowds.

We waved Stratford goodbye and went to Evesham, where we planned to stop for dinner. Aaagh! Stuck in a traffic jam for miles! And now we discover there is a festival to celebrate the Battle of Evesham.

We found a car park close to the town centre and went to explore. Our first find was this old entrance.

Almost opposite was the almonry museum, an old building that looked like it was waiting to fall down! Look at the size of that chimney place!

A little bit further and we discovered an old abbey set in beautiful grounds that went down to the River Avon.

I had found it quite tiring shuffling through the streets with the crowds in Stratford 😔 and wasn’t keen on too much more walking today so I was happy when it was decided to go back to our hotel for dinner instead of staying in Evesham.

I’m touristed out! I’ll sleep well tonight!
