Wray Castle & Rum Doodle

What’s the connection?

When we booked our accommodation at the Rum Doodle B & B in Windermere we had no idea of its connection to mountaineering. It was our host at Y Baerth cottage near Caernarfon who pointed out that it was a famous book – and now I’ve looked it up it sounds like a fun read!

Our room at the Rum Doodle was called ‘Prone’ who is one of the characters in the book, a doctor who has so many ailments he is useless.

We had no idea of any of this history when we booked our accommodation here, choosing this place purely because its funny name appealed to us 😊.

So where does Wray Castle fit in? Merely because it’s being used as a venue to display information about a 1924 British Expedition to Mt Everest!

There were fabulous story boards and photos of this tragic expedition, where Mallory & Irvine lost their lives in the attempt to reach the summit.

So what is the overall connection to Windermere and the Lake District? Well it turns out this mountainous countryside is a training ground for aspiring mountaineers and the area that those ill-fated climbers trained before attempting their Everest ascent.

So Day 50 we made the connection between Wray Castle, the Rum Doodle and the Lake District… and we thought we were only there for the views!
