In the little village of Avenel in Victoria there is an outstanding Thai restaurant that we were fortunate to experience a few days ago.

Chāar long translates literally to ‘slow down’ and that’s what you are encouraged to do as you are served delicious taste sensations from the set menu offered at this exclusive restaurant
Magnificent oak trees frame the entrance to this simple building which is nestled beside an historic stone bridge

With maximum seating for about 20 people and open for lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only we were very lucky that my sister booked many weeks in advance to ensure we had a table.
And so the courses began .…

I can’t begin to describe the refreshing flavours that we wrapped in a betel leaf. It certainly got our taste buds zinging with hints of lemongrass, chilli 🌶️ and tamarind. The pastry encasing the mild curry puffs was light and flaky – and very more-ish. Our Brave Goose Viognier was the perfect accompaniment.
Then these buns arrived like soft fluffy clouds. I wish I could remember all the delicious ingredients to make your mouth water too but …

Then it was time for the main course, a chicken yellow curry, aromatic and full of flavour, served with fresh vegetables wrapped in omelette and roti with a satay style sauce.

A coconut ice cream on a creamy sago base finished our meal along with a Tar & Roses Pinot Grigio.

This was more than a meal – it was an experience!

The food, the friends we shared it with and the unhurried atmosphere made it a day to remember.
A great philosophy – Chāar long – slow down!
