Driving Through the Glens

I want to sing “Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the Glen …” 🎶 but it wasn’t the Glens of Antrim he rode through… nowhere near them! I’m sure the Glens we drove through after leaving the Giant’s Causeway are far more spectacular though!

To fortify us for the return journey we visited Bushmills, a famous whisky distillery. We did buy a couple of their bottles, but at the lower end of the price ranges on offer. We felt £2,200 ($4,400) was a tad too much out of our holiday budget! That was for a bottle, not a case! 😱

Our drive home took us back around the coast through Carrick-a-Rede where there was a rope bridge walk we were looking forward to doing but by the time we got there the rain was coming down quite heavily so we decided this was one adventure we’d have to miss out on. Then we discovered we had to have a booking to cross the rope bridge anyway so I’m glad we decided against braving the wet weather for this experience that would have turned out to be a non-event!

The rain, however, produced the most amazing rainbow I have ever seen. I felt I could have reached out and touched it. And that pot of gold was right there!

A pot of gold right there!

A few more coastal scenes before we turned towards Ballymena and home.

It was a day of spectacular coastal scenery, visiting an iconic destination at the Giant’s Causeway, dodging showers of rain and travelling home through the glens. Here’s the map of our route today, this little story taking us back home to our accommodation at the Lighthouse Loft along the inland road.

The Lighthouse Loft Accommodation

We drove down an alley between two shops and saw this ugly brick building- no lighthouse to be seen! Oh well, let’s check it out! Appearances certainly are deceptive because inside was a very comfortable 2 bedroom apartment decorated everywhere with, you guessed it, lighthouses!

Day 57: We enjoyed our 3 night stay here and it was perfectly positioned to do the tourist things and also board the ferry from Larne back to Stranraer. Our Irish ☘️ holiday is over!
