The Dalton Fossil is not the oldest person in town but this amazing 21 million year old rock!
The leaf fossils it contains are so clear and detailed it is hard to believe it is so old.
And when you consider it was used as the front step of a local shop before it was ‘rescued’ to be displayed here it’s excellent condition is even more remarkable.
Dalton is only 10kms from Gunning, where I have been camped for a couple of days, along a narrow, winding country road and the fossil is in a little park near the bridge on the way into the village.
I love finding these fascinating little snippets of history in the most unlikely places. It’s definitely one of the joys of travelling the way I do, with time to get off the beaten track onto the roads less travelled.
And that’s how I found the Dalton Fossil!
