Boolboonda Tunnel

On the road between Gin Gin and Mt Perry (Queensland) I passed a sign to the Boolboonda Tunnel. I couldn’t resist the short detour to see it. 🚐

It was originally part of a railway line that ran from North Bundaberg to Mt Perry but it has long since closed and the rail line was removed in 1961.

Read the bottom line of the sign!

The tunnel is now home to a colony of Bent-wing bats, tiny little animals that hug the rock ceiling until they are disturbed by tourists like me invading their space.

This tunnel is amazing! It is a totally unsupported structure 192 metres long and carved through sheer rock. Best of all – you can drive through it!

There’s light at the end of the tunnel 😊

And I’m almost back where I started … Boolboonda Tunnel

The tunnel is only 2 kms off the main road and well worth the short detour.
