It looks like a miniature lighthouse but it shone the way for ships to safely enter Burnett Heads in Queensland for 99 years, before being retired from service in 1972.

We recently had an ‘overnighter’ at Burnett Heads Lighthouse Caravan Park and our motorhome site was almost in front of this pretty little lighthouse. Thank goodness it has been decommissioned and is now an historical icon in the area!

The lighthouse was transported by ship from Cowan Cowan on Moreton Island, near Queensland’s state capitol of Brisbane, in 1873 and was replaced by a modern lighthouse in 1973.
I’m sure the new one is more efficient but it couldn’t be nearly as aesthetically pleasing as this quaint little red and white original. What do you think?

Where is Burnett Heads?
