A clapper bridge has absolutely nothing to do with applauding although it must have taken many hands to build these mammoth rock bridges over waterways.

Just look at the size of that granite slab and try and imagine it being manhandled into position! This one at Postbridge is one of the best examples of a clapper bridge remaining in Devon.

It spans a pretty stream, the East Dart River, with crystal clear water bubbling over smooth river stones.

The road bridge is only about 20 metres away and although not as historic as the clapper bridge it is charming and frames the landscape beautifully.

This is a place to stop and enjoy the peaceful scene, listen to the bubbling waters and appreciate the local history.

There will be plenty of other opportunities to ‘go like the clappers’!

So brave to cross on this bridge without being an aerialist!

It looks like a narrow beam from this angle bit was actually wide enough for a horse and cart to cross. No bravery needed. 🙃
