Dave “I think we’ll book a trip on a train to see Snowdon“ Me “Do we have to?” Dave “You’ll enjoy it!” Me “Hmmm!”

What a fabulous day we had!
We booked one of the shorter journeys on the Welsh Highland Railway that actually picked us up at a station local to where we are staying, Waunfawr, and took us to Beddgelert and return.

Our train was originally from South Africa and was used to transport coal but it was bought to Wales, lovingly restored and has chuffed along this narrow gauge railway track since the 1990’s.

The countryside was so diverse – green valleys, dense forests, sheer rock faces, slate mines and mist covered mountains.

“I think I can, I think I can” … the engine pulled us up the mountain to Rhyd Ddu, the highest point on the line.
Several people got off here as it’s the starting point to climb Snowdon.

We stopped in Beddgelert for 90 minutes, enough time to walk around the village and get a bite to eat. A little cafe got my attention offering good coffee and fresh baguettes but after waiting 10 minutes while the owner slowly buttered 3 baguettes and noting that a cup of coffee was £4.25 ($8.50) I soon lost interest and we wandered on to something more reasonable!

It was time for our return journey so we walked back to the station and boarded for home.

There was no need for Dave to ask if I’d enjoyed the train journey as it was obvious I had. What is it about trains that makes you feel like a child?
Toot! Toot! 🚂
