Hopping Off & On in Hong Kong

With limited time in Hong Kong we decided to buy the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off ticket for all 3 sections. (AUD$95 each). I was exhausted by the time we found our pickup point and we hadn’t even hopped on yet!

It was only a short walk from our hotel, the Sheraton in Nathan Road, but the signage was random and we backtracked several times before finally boarding the bus. A bonus was seeing these amazing tree roots reaching down from above.

As we were in Kowloon we chose the Blue Route first which took us through both old and new areas of Hong Kong and showed off many of the modern buildings around the waterfront.

We were a bit overwhelmed and unsure of the areas we visited so stayed on the bus throughout the journey but did make a note to go back to the Temple Street Night Markets later on.

The second stage of the ticket took us by ferry across to Hong Kong Island. Unfortunately it was quite a walk from our drop off point to the ferry terminal so before heading off we were advised that the 8P bus would take us there so we jumped on the next one available. About 500 metres along the road and before we reached our stop, Dave panics 😱. The backpack! Where’s the backpack?

Despite all the protests of our young bus driver, who knew we wanted to go to the ferry, we got off the bus at the next stop to retrace our steps. That’s right, Dave had put it down when we got off the Big Bus 500 metres away. He did a mad dash back while I sat at the bus stop. His luck is still holding because there it was, right where he’d left it! I am no longer surprised when he loses things – and by now probably neither are you! 🤔

Backpack recovered we walked the rest of the way to the ferry terminal and were soon on our way for Tour 2.

By the time we arrived we had been out for a few hours so before boarding the bus I needed a toilet 🚻. Do you think I could find one? We followed signs that disappeared to nothingness and all the time the need became more urgent ‼️. Dave came to the rescue when he bought tickets to the Maritime Museum, for no other reason than to use the loo. Disaster averted 😳

The Green Bus route then took us all around Hong Kong Island. It showed a totally different aspect of life here with open spaces, beaches as well as residential towers.

It was a very steep winding drive in places and sitting on the open upper deck seemed really precarious at times. I held on for grim life and closed my eyes tight on a few occasions but when they were open there were some lovely sights.

A couple of ‘must have’ pics from our walk back to the hotel.

A remnant of British rule – the old Fire Station now a shopping mall
A magnificent tree surviving modern life

It was a full on day and by the time we had walked back to the hotel we weren’t as enthusiastic about too many night time adventures. However, after a short rest, we asked the Concierge to book us a taxi to go to the night market in Temple Street. Something got lost in translation as the cab never arrived so change of plans saw us at Delaneys Irish Pub, a short walk away.

We tumbled into bed with sore feet and a little sad that our wonderful holiday was nearly over.
