We Chose The Byway …

Highways can be so boring! You’re really forced to travel at top speed and there’s certainly no stopping for a photo opportunity so we often opt for a secondary road where we can amble along at our leisure without frustrating other drivers.

This usually makes for a much more interesting trip – and today was no exception!

When we left Inglewood this morning we decided to travel the back roads on our way to Moree to catch up with long time friend Kristina, who moved there a few months ago. We were having an overnight stop before we got there and decided on the little community of Croppa Creek.

We ‘sort of’ did the dark blue line!

What the dark blue line doesn’t show you is – there’s about 20 or 30kms of dirt road! 😱

Anyhow, I’m ahead of myself because our first stop after leaving Inglewood this morning was Yelarbon (yull – ar – bon). A magnificent bank of painted silos welcomed you to town and a little further on we took the ‘byway’!

As far as dirt roads go it wasn’t too bad. It had a firm base and was only corrugated in a few places. When we first turned onto it we crossed the Dumaresq River and I pulled over and asked Dave if he wanted to continue – after all it could have been 500 metres or 500 kilometres. We decided to forge ahead and only 50 metres along was the Queensland/New South Wales border.

We did a ‘ shake, rattle and roll’ through some lush green countryside bordered by patches of yellow daffodils ? 🌼 and crossed the McIntyre River until we joined the Bruxner Highway towards our destination.

The sign for The Vicarage Coffee shop at North Star enticed us to stop for lunch but … no luck … and no lunch today! It was closed up tight!

It was worth a roadside stop though just to photograph this building! I bet it could tell a few stories.

A few kilometres further on and destination achieved! We’ve arrived at Croppa Creek!

Camping tonight.

A donation camp behind the local bowls club with both showers and toilets. Can’t get better than that in this hot sticky weather 🚿
