I kid you not! This little town of Thoona ( pub and general store big) has held Wheelie Bin Races for the last 20 years and I was fortunate enough to share in the fun last Saturday.

Wheelie bins made into modern day billy carts were towed to the top of the rise in town then given an almighty push by their team to carry them downhill with hopefully enough oomph to cross the finish line.

A sprinkling of rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and although it may have kept a few away those that were there lined the main street to cheer on their favourites.

If you were a spur of the moment competitor you could pay $25 and choose a previously prepared Wheelie bin to race.

And they’re off! They raced two at a time down the long slow hill urging their charges over the finish line to clock the fastest time and become this years champion.

Some wriggled their way to the end ….

And others flew past ….

What a hoot! I love a ‘touch of crazy’ and Thoona certainly delivered it!
