Today I saw the spectacular painted Silos at Coonalpyn in South Australia.

The children depicted on the silos are from the local area and the artist used children to express ‘hope for the future’ in the area.

Coonalpyn is one of those small country towns with many closed shops and a shrinking community. They hoped that the painted silos would attract people to the area and provide some stimulus to their economy. A coffee shop across the road from the silos has since opened and serves excellent coffee.

The Silo Art Trail has become a major tourist attraction for travellers, giving them a reason to visit areas they may normally pass by. I’m looking forward to following the trail in a few weeks time to admire these massive art works which now extend into Queensland, New South Wales and of course South Australia that I visited today.
