The Village Smithy

The Herberton Historical Village on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland has demonstrations at different times of some disappearing trades …. like blacksmithing.

This lanky fellow, DarrylCooper, was heating up the flames to shape a coat hook he was making for his demonstration.

It came out of the furnace glowing red and was beaten and twisted into shape then plunged into cold water.

It was a fascinating demo and the smith’s patter as he was working entertained us as he explained his process and the tools he used.

This talented gentleman may have demonstrated a simple coat hook but he is certainly capable of much more intricate work, as this next photo shows.

The best type of crocodile! A sculptured one!
