Anmatjere Man

Aileron is about 150 kms north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway. It’s basically a roadhouse with a bar and caravan park attached but is much better known for its giant sculpture of a native man standing on top of a hill overlooking the tourists who stop to view him.

Anmatjere Man

Anmatjere Man (pronounced un-mutjurra ) stands 12 metres tall with the tip of his spear reaching to 17 metres and he dominates the Aileron skyline. He was sculpted by Mark Egan who is well known in Alice Springs for his sculptures of large objects.

At road level his wife stands with their child at her side and a goanna or perentie as they are called here – another massive sculpture! My friend Joy is standing there to show you just how big this sculpture is.

The next stage of our journey takes us to Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, just under 1400 kilometres away, but there’s a lot to see between here and there. Unfortunately internet and phone reception is almost nonexistent in many areas so I’ll have to play catch up when I can.

Our next stopover? Devil’s Marbles, a spectacular rock formation. Can’t wait to share it with you 😊🚐
