On the way to Cooktown there is a lookout where you can pull off the road to view Black Mountain and discover why it is so unusual.

Black Mountain – we’ll, it’s really more like a big hill – looks like a huge pile of angular black rocks with very little vegetation or ground cover of any kind. It’s very black and very bare!

Rather than being a man-made mullock heap, as it looks, it is the result of soil being eroded away over time exposing the rocky base of the hill beneath.

Isn’t nature amazing? I’m so glad there was a place to pull over to discover more about Black Mountain and find an explanation for this unusual sight!
